Common Hotel and Casino Crimes
There a many different criminal offenses that could occur in a casino or hotel while in Las Vegas. Some of the more common include:
- Larceny – Nevada law has two classifications for theft: petit larceny and grand larceny. According to NRS §205.240 and §205.220, a person is guilty of larceny if they intentionally steal, take, lead away or drive away, personal goods, bedding, furniture or other property; If they use a card or other device to withdraw or transfer money they are not entitled to; Or if they intentionally steal, take or lead away livestock or other domesticated animals owned by another. The offense is considered petit theft if the value of the good or property is below $650, and grand larceny if the goods or property is above $650. Petit larceny is a Misdemeanor, whereas grand larceny is a category C Felony.
- Breach of Peace – Otherwise known as disturbing the peace or disorderly conduct, NRS §203.010 states that a person is guilty of breach of peace if they maliciously or willfully disturb the peace or quiet of any neighborhood or person or family by loud or unusual noises, or by tumultuous and offensive conduct, threatening, quarreling, challenging to fight or fighting. Any person accused of this offense will be charged with a Misdemeanor.
- Resisting Arrest – According to §199.280, a person commits the offense of resisting arrest if they willfully resist, delay or obstruct a public officer from discharging or attempting to discharge any legal duty of his or her office. This includes trying to flee, not staying still while being handcuffed or verbally abusing the officer as they try to speak with you or give orders. An individual accused of this crime will be charged with a misdemeanor. If a firearm is used, or the individual takes an officers firearm, the charge will be a category C Felony.
- Bad Checks – Under NRS §205.130 the crime of passing a bad check is defined as a person willfully passes a check knowing there is insufficient funds in the account to cover the amount of the check. A person who is accused of using a bad check will be charged with a Misdemeanor. If the amount of the check is more than $650, it is considered a category D Felony.
Penalties for Nevada Hotel and Casino Crimes
